Research and Training Centre for GIS & Remote Sensing

The Centre for Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing (CGIS) was founded in 1999 through an agreement between the former national University of Rwanda and the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International (DFGFI). It was created to enhance regional capacity in conservation science and related technologies. Initial point of contact at the University was made through the Faculty of Science and Technology.

The Mission of the CGIS-UR is to promote teaching, research, consultancy and community service in GIS and Remote Sensing to address issues related to Environment and Natural Resources Management, Urban and Regional Planning towards economic transformation and sustainable development at national and regional levels. Objectives Regional Outreach Centre CGIS aims to develop its capability to serve as a regional outreach center in the fields of Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing.

The Vision of the CGIS-UR is to serve as a national and regional teaching and research outreach centre of excellence in the fields of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS).
